For the love of God, Can we just find some respect for rest!

Ever freak the hell out in your teaching journey that you don't know enough? don't know enough about anatomy, about the repertoire, about what the latest science is saying about x, y or z. So what's the first thing you do?.....work harder right?

Maybe you think "If I just carve out more time to study, to observe, to workout, to watch the latest video, to read the latest report then I'll be good enough"

I'm exhausted just writing that stuff down but really, honestly when I freak out that's the kind of self talk that goes on in my head. And I'm thinking if that goes on for me it probably goes on for at least some of you to.

Heres what the science is saying......
(and if you don't believe me, I've listed some resources below you can check out yourself)

We don't need to work harder to grow. We actually need to rest!

We need to find the right amount of stress (moving a bit beyond our comfort zone) and then need to step away completely and unplug in order to grow!"

- Steve Magness & Brad Stulberg

....you feel me yet?

More than often I think Pilates People get the 'stress' bit right. We are pretty good at identifying where the gaps are, what we need to work on, and what we need to improve. But we kind of suck with the rest bit, which is why burn out is so common.

The Brain (just like muscle) adapts when.....

you step away

when you unplug

when you sleep

when you play

and when you rest

Lets just all agree to have some #respectforrest this week!

When we do this we give ourselves a chance to absorb what we have just learnt, to process and connect the dots. So we come back feeling refreshed, focussed and ready for the next challenge.

Do this Now

If you do anything this week. Go away and figure out what rest means to you? How do you like to unplug?

Hint - step away from your phone, computer and Netflix and get out in Nature, do a quick breathing exercise, lay in the park and cloud watch for 10 minutes or go for oh so casual stroll!
